Update from Pastor Ron
We’re in a season of beginnings and endings: while the end of 2025 rushes toward us, we mark the time of Advent as the first few days of the global and historic church’s New Year. I’m glad to share some updates on church governance and administration as we’ve just held our year-end congregational meeting this past Sunday.
A New Council
We welcomed three newly elected members
to the Butler Church Council: Jim Holm as Moderator, Suzanne Slattery as Secretary, and Jim Rodriguez as Treasurer. Further, Anne Guenther was re-installed as the Faith Community (FC) representative. I am so thankful for the willingness of these new members to serve and look forward to their leadership and wisdom among us with a year of significant transition ahead. Further, for their diligence and faithful service in Council leadership we thank
Matt Jacobs (Moderator), Shelly Coleman (Secretary), and Rosalie Carter (Treasurer). NOTE: Two of these elections required special action: (1) the secretary position is provisional until a future congregational meeting can consider amendments to the church constitution that loosen current requirements for multi-congregational representation on the executive; and (2) the FC position required suspending the bylaws regarding term limits.
Transition, Vision, & Strategic Planning
With working posters affixed to the Family Center walls, attendees from all four congregations were able to review and discuss this early feedback data. (See link for photos.) I then summarized the strategic planning discussions
that have taken place so far with each congregational leadership team. Further, I presented our working draft of a timeline for transition (see link) – this includes both decision-making settings and implementation of a new vision and strategic plan. Please join me in prayer for clarity and “unity in diversity” for this transition season. Also, be on the lookout for times when each congregation will hold their own listening sessions with leadership.
So many folks have expressed hope and confidence in God’s good hand guiding Butler’s journey over these next weeks and months. Let’s take heart in this scriptural reminder: People plan their path, but the LORD secures their steps (Prov 16.9).
Provisional Budget 2026
In light of the above described transition process, the overall church budget will likely require some important adjustments. Therefore, a provisional budget (with slight deficit) was approved under the conditions that a revision will be brought to the congregation
by March 15, 2026.
Christmas Services
Alongside our Sunday Advent services I’m looking forward to the following two additional worship settings:
Blue Christmas
(Dec 21 @ 2 pm) is a reflective time where create space to grieve loss of loved ones in this past year and honor their memories in the holiday season. If you know of someone who would benefit from having their loss acknowledged in this way
please encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity;
Christmas Eve
(Dec 24 @ 5 pm) we will host our annual Christmas Eve service featuring carols, readings, a children’s story, and candlelight blessing. We look forward to welcoming young and old, friends and family, and those from near and far in a celebration of God’s announcement of “goodwill” to all people!

Lessons & Carols concert
The Sierra Chorale, a new choral ensemble under the direction of Roy Klassen, will be holding A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols concert on Friday, December 19th, at 7pm
at University Presbyterian Church (1776 E. Roberts, Fresno). Several Butler members are a part of the chorale. Admission is free.

Missions Offering Update
We're getting closer to meeting our goal for the Mission Offering, now at $18,440! We’re at 92% of our goal to support our missionaries and local mission initiatives in 2026. If you made a giving pledge or were not yet able to give, you can do so online or give this Sunday.
Be sure to mark your gift “Missions Offering.” Thanks!
Year end gifts are also appreciated which can be designated to the Butler Church general budget.

Advent week 2: Peace
In the season of Advent
we join with millions of Jesus followers in a deeply meaningful of time of reflection and celebration. Here at Butler, with our theme “The Slow Work of God” our gatherings are exploring what it means to partner with God patiently and faithfully in the restoration and healing of our world.
This week is centered around PEACE. The art piece from this past Sunday points us to peace that comes when we make space for each other's place in God's story. If you missed this past Sunday, livestreams from our English services are available on our YouTube channel. A new art piece was also available for reflection.
from the artist statement:
In this image, the child and the infant are represented by the roots. The viper represents the asp and the adder. The threat looms, yet the roots thrive and the sprout emerges from the stump. The prey and the predator are on equal terms; no longer is one superior to another.
We must humanize one another. We must honor each other’s ancestry.

Advent week 1: Hope
In the season of Advent
we join with millions of Jesus followers in a deeply meaningful of time of reflection and celebration. Here at Butler, our theme is “The Slow Work of God” and, for the next 5 Sundays, our gatherings will explore what it means to partner with God patiently and faithfully in the restoration and healing of our world.
This week is centered around HOPE. The art piece from this past Sunday brings us hope that comes when we make 'war no more.' You can reflect on the art piece and the artists' reflections. If you missed this past Sunday, livestreams from our English services are available on our YouTube channel.
from the artist statement:
"...both of these tools are used in the process of regeneration, but they are not in themselves symbols of a bountiful harvest. Like gardening, “learning war no more” is a daily practice requiring dedication and lots of trust that we are truly cultivating an environment for Godʼs peace to one day bloom.
And so, in this Advent season, what needs to be plowed or pruned?
What daily acts of regeneration will provide for you and the generations who come after you?"

Update on Anul
Thank you to all who have been praying and supporting our sister, Anul Ram, who has been detained by ICE since August. She has been in a legal process to be able to return to Fresno and her ministry and family here at Butler Church. Unfortunately the immigration judge recently ruled that she is "subject to removal" and will be sent to her birth country of Fiji. She does not know how soon this will happen but likely within the next 2 months.
Anul is thanking God for the love and family she has here in Fresno and trusting God for what will come next. We are thanking Him for connections that have been made in Fiji where she may be able to stay and rebuild her life. Please continue to pray
for peace and guidance for Anul.
Community Festival Highlights!
There was a big turnout for the Community Festival last Saturday! A big THANK YOU
to Nzash Lumeya, Pastor Bruce Hood, and Teen Challenge, and the 50 volunteers – many resources were made available to our community! This included free food, shoes, bicycles, a car and motorcycle show, and support for addiction recovery.
Brother Nzash’s top highlights were (1) Gratitude:
for this vision becoming a reality and the great weather….the sun came out just as the event started! (2) Many Butler people serving together: setting up early; organized with shoes; tracts and Bibles given out (all available Bibles were taken!); Butler pastors opening and closing the event with a powerful message and prayer (3) Surprises of how God provided
more than we could ask or imagine: FPU offering use of the land; assistance from FPU campus safety; preachers in Spanish; extra food that wasn’t planned for; and a young man who committed his life to Christ and is now connected with the recovery program….join us in praying for Isaac.
This Saturday (Dec 6)
Nzash is hosting another prayer gathering to give thanks for this event and seek God’s continued guidance in ways to reach our community with the love of Jesus. This outreach prayer gathering is every first Saturday at 10AM
in Room 16.
Christian Leader News and Magazine
A new issue of the Christian Leader is available! This bimonthly magazine features articles and news stories to help connect the US Mennonite Brethren churches with each other and our broader MB family.
You can
receive the Christian Leader
by mail or find it online.
(If you are not currently on the mailing list but would like to be added, please let the church office know!) News stories, feature articles and columns are published on their website, like these recent pieces:
ABCs of Partnership
(featuring Butler Church literacy mentors!)
Assistance Fund Donations
Through the Butler Church Benevolent Assistance Fund, we have been able to help with several time sensitive needs recently. Given the upcoming cuts in SNAP funding even more requests may be coming in soon. Please consider making an additional donation to the church benevolent fund, by designating for this in the offering or through giving online. We also work with partner agencies like MB Foundation and Everence to expand our capacity through matching grants.
If caring for needs of folks in our community in very practical ways is something close to your heart, please also talk with your pastor or contact the church office. We would like to build a social action response team that can respond to needs as they are made known. If you have a personal need, please also talk with a pastor.
